Micky Lou "Beck" Bechtelheimer

Mickey Lou “Beck” Bechtelheimer, 92, departed this life to be with the Lord on September 5, 2025 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  He was born May 27, 1933 in Laketon Indiana into the home of Harold and Helen (Butler) Bechtelheimer and later moved to Colorado Springs in 1941.  Beck graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1951.  Beck also served a short time in the United States Air Force.

Beck was married to Jane Mitchell and they had 3 children together, John, James and Susan.  He later married Elaine Brooks in 1971, who had 3 children, Stan, Sharon and Jeff.

Beck enjoyed bowling, golfing, hunting, camping and fishing, but his most cherished hobby/career was stock car race announcer.  He spent 59 years doing what he loved most!  It all started in 1962 when he was asked to be a scoring judge at Pikes Peak Speedway where he was promised $5.00 a night if they sold enough tickets.  Then one night the announcer of the track did not show up so the microphone was scooted in front of Beck to announce that race and the rest is history.  He announced at almost every racing venue in the Pikes Peak Region including Raceway Park, Rains Raceway, Colorado Springs International Speedway, Pikes Peak International Speedway, Beacon Hill Speedway, Honors Speedway, El Paso County Fairgrounds and 39 years straight on the Pikes Peak Hill Climb.  He was known as the “voice of racing” of Southern Colorado and loved by many.  Beck was inducted into the Colorado Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2017, Pikes Peak Speedway Hall of Fame in 2023 and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Hall of Fame in 2024.

Preceding him in death are his parents Harold Bechtelheimer (the first State Patrol Trooper murdered in the line of duty) and Helen Helton, Sister Janet Cameron, son James Bechtelhimer and step-son Stan Brooks.  Surviving Beck is his wife Elaine, children John, Susan (husband Mark), step-children Sharon (husband Bill) and Jeff (wife Judy), several grandchildren Victoria, Erica, Kelly, Jessica, Tyler, James, Logan, Jazmyn, Alixandrea, Coy and Richard and great grandchildren Jordan, Darinka, Colette, Adelina, Caylee, Hadley, Havenly, Hartley, Levi, Marcus, Zachary and Marley.

Those that knew Beck will remember what a warm and caring person he was and his fun sense of humor.  He will truly be missed by all those that knew him.

A visitation will be held on Friday, September 19th at 10:30am and will be followed by a funeral service at 11:45am at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2111 Carlton Avenue.  Food will be served at the church after the service and then burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery at 3:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation, 2550 Tenderfoot Hill Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80906 or to St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Genuine Great Person whom I had the pleasure of working with (Woolco Dept Store) and enjoying many, many Saturday nights on turn two at the speedway with my family. Only fond memories when we think of Beck. RIP
