Laura M. Altmann
Laura M. Altmann, 96, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away on September 17, 2026.
Laura was born on October 20, 1929, in the Moonlight community north of Abilene, Kansas. She graduated with the Class of 1947 from Dickinson County Community High School in Chapman, Kansas.
In February 1949, Laura married Lyle Altmann. They shared 50 years together before his death in September 1999. In February 2007, she married David Hughes; they divorced in 2021.
Laura devoted 35 years of her career to Colorado Interstate Gas Company, which later became Kinder Morgan. Her commitment to serving others continued throughout her life. She volunteered at UCHealth for 25 years, was active in the Al Kaly Shrine Temple Women’s Patrol for 40 years and was a devoted member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Carlton Avenue for 30 years. She also volunteered with Pikes Peak United Way for three years.
Laura will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, quick wit, strong work ethic, and determination. She was an exceptional knitter, cook, baker, and candy maker and was especially known for the delicious toffee she lovingly made and shared each holiday season.
Laura also took great pride in always looking her best. She wore the highest heels for as long as she could, and the first thing she did each morning was put on her makeup and style her hair. As she often said, “I know I am vain, but no one sees me without my makeup on, my hair fixed, and my nails done.” Her confidence, style, humor, and unforgettable personality remained with her throughout her life. Laura’s spirit animal was a Turtle which was her signature for years.
Laura was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Altmann; her parents, Floyd and Laura Amess; her sisters, Grace Warn, Lois Chamberlin, and Maxine Rider; and her brother, George Amess.
She is survived by her daughter, Ann Fields of Porum, Oklahoma; granddaughters, Juli Hudson of Midland, Texas, and Kim Johnson-Hamilton of McKinney, Texas; great-grandchildren, Eli Johnson of Boise, Idaho, Emma Hudson of Miami, Florida, and Paul Hudson of McKinney, Texas; nieces, Twyla Strange of Ponca City, Oklahoma, and Sheryl Kelgard of Scottsdale, Arizona; nephews, Dennis Rider of Abilene, Kansas, Kenny Rider of Wichita, Kansas, and David Amess of Colorado Springs, Colorado, whom she loved like a son; her neighbor, best friend, and devoted caregiver, Kai Lee Norwood; and her faithful dog, Roxy.
In accordance with Laura’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will take place on October 10th at 11:00 am. Swan-Law (Dignity Memorial) Chapel, Colorado Springs, CO.
Memorial contributions in Laura’s honor may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Carlton Avenue, or Shriners Childrens.
