Liturgy

Springs Rescue Mission is our January Monthly Mission. Springs Rescue Mission uses a holistic approach to overcoming homeless.
Understanding homelessness begins with understanding the complex causes and challenges that men and women face and dispelling the myths that we encounter.
Their holistic approach focuses on three pillars of life: housing,health and work. They believe that this approach gives guests the skills, knowledge and abilities they need to be active members of their communities.
They want more for their guests lives than just survival. We want them to truly thrive. In this effort, they hope to remind their guests of their inherent human dignity- that they are created in the image of God who loves them.
They offer clothing, breakfast and dinner, hygiene, housing, linens, household items and job training.

Down to the River to Pray
W&S

1. As I went down to the
river to pray,
studyin’ about that
good ole way and who shall
wear the starry crown,
good Lord, show me the way.

O, sisters, let’s go down,
let’s go down, come on down.
Come on, sisters, let’s go down,
down to the river to pray.

2. As I went down to the
river to pray,
studyin’ about that
good ole way and who shall
wear the robe and crown,
good Lord, show me the way.

O, brothers, let’s go down,
let’s go down, come on down.
Come on, brothers, let’s go down,
down to the river to pray.

3. As I went down to the
river to pray,
studyin’ about that
good ole way and who shall
wear the starry crown,
good Lord, show me the way.

O, fathers, let’s go down,
let’s go down, come on down.
Come on, fathers, let’s go down,
down to the river to pray.

4. As I went down to the
river to pray,
studyin’ about that
good ole way and who shall
wear the robe and crown,
good Lord, show me the way.

O, mothers, let’s go down,
let’s go down, come on down.
Come on, mothers, let’s go down,
down to the river to pray.

5. As I went down to the
river to pray,
studyin’ about that
good ole way and who shall
wear the starry crown,
good Lord, show me the way.

O, sinners, let’s go down,
let’s go down, come on down.
Come on, sinners, let’s go down,
down to the river to pray.

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing
UMH #400
WORDS: Robert Robinson, 1758 (1 Sam. 7:12)

1. Come, thou Fount
of every blessing,
tune my heart
to sing thy grace;

streams of mercy,
never ceasing,
call for songs of
loudest praise.

Teach me some
melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming
tongues above.

Praise the mount!
I’m fixed upon it,
mount of thy
redeeming love.

2. Here I raise
mine Ebenezer;
hither by thy
help I’m come;

and I hope, by
thy good pleasure,
safely to
arrive at home.

Jesus sought me
when a stranger,
wandering from the
fold of God;

he, to rescue
me from danger,
interposed his
precious blood.

3. O to grace
how great a debtor
daily I’m
constrained to be!

Let thy goodness,
like a fetter,
bind my wandering
heart to thee.

Prone to wander,
Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the
God I love;

here’s my heart,
O take and seal it,
seal it for thy
courts above.

Scripture Reading
Matthew 3:13-17
Nancy Gehrung

Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw God’s Spirit descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from the heavens said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”

Prayer for Illumination

All: be acceptable in your sight, O Lord our rock and our redeemer.

Prayer Song
Sweet, Sweet Spirit
UMH #334
WORDS: Doris Akers, 1962
© 1962 Manna Music, Inc.

There’s a sweet,
sweet Spirit in this place,
and I know that it’s
the Spirit of the Lord;

there are sweet
expressions on each face,
and I know
they feel the presence
of the Lord.

Refrain
Sweet Holy Spirit,
sweet heavenly Dove,
stay right here with us,
filling us with your love;

and for these blessings
we lift our hearts in praise;
without a doubt we’ll know
that we have been revived
when we shall
leave this place.

Pastoral Prayer, Silent Prayer, The Lord’s Prayer
Rev. David Petty

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father
who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy Name;

Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done
on earth
as it is in heaven.

Give us this day
our daily bread,
and forgive us
our trespasses,

as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
Lead us not
into temptation
but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the Kingdom,
and the Power
and the Glory forever.
Amen
